Farm to Cone: Salt & Straw’s New August Flavors
Each month, Salt & Straw draws inspiration from local communities to create five unique flavors and use their ice cream as a platform to share deserving stories. This August is no exception as the Pacific Heights scoop shop is partnering with local farms to celebrate both their unique practices and the best flavors of the season.
From Full Belly Farm, an organization committed to fostering sustainability on all levels, from soil fertility to stable employment for workers, comes Carrot Cake Batter and Pralined Hazelnuts.
From Tomatero Organic Farm, a group that provides year-round employment, health care benefits, and above-market wages for staff comes flavors Freckled Chocolate Zucchini Bread and Green Fennel and Maple.
Star Route Farms’ renowned eggplant is featured in a new Eggplant Honey Custard flavor, and Flying Disc Ranch’s “eco-dynamic” farming methods produced the dates in the new Chocolate Date Shake flavor.
These flavors are only available through the end of the month (August 31), so get them while they last!
Carrot Cake Batter & Pralined Hazelnuts
Shredded and roasted carrots from Full Belly Farm are mixed into a creamy spiced ice cream with a hint of molasses. Crunchy, candied hazelnuts and a swirl of cheesecake frosting round out the flavors.
Freckled Chocolate Zucchini Bread
Generous chunks of fresh-baked zucchini bread stirred into a chocolate-speckled ice cream spiked with cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. The zucchini comes from Tomatero Organic Farm in Watsonville.
Green Fennel & Maple
Caramelized Tomatero Organic Farm whole fennel blended with Morse Farms’ Vermont maple syrup.
Eggplant Honey Custard
Roasted Star Route Farms eggplant sweetened with honey and spiked with freshly grated nutmeg.
Chocolate Date Shake
Flying Disc Ranch dates soaked in water and plum vinegar then pureed into cream and finished by streaming in a river of dark chocolate that breaks off into flakes as it cool.
